Howdy! Welcome to the reveal for the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge! As a reminder, links to my previous posts as well as featured designers and the other guest participants are at the bottom of this post. Be sure to check out all of the creativity and talent shared during this challenge. This was my first One Room Challenge and while it was stressful, it’s been a lot of fun! Before: A Bright and Colorful Little Girl Bedroom

Before we take a look at the completed room, let’s take a look back to remember what I started with! My poor kiddo had been living with a mix up of two different aesthetics; walls and curtains from her little girl room, and bedding from her pre-teen room along with nails from fairy artwork I had removed!! It’s been quite a transformation and I need a reminder of how not to drag my feet completing my own projects!

Yep, I felt like a pretty bad mama! Well no more!! She has a fabulous new room that she can grow into in her teen years! She lays in bed at night now and tells me how much she loves her room. This was the plan for her room and I think we ended up nailing it!!

After: A Fresh and Creative Space Perfect for a Teen Girl

I started off her design knowing I was going to use paint from the new Sherwin Williams Emerald Designer Edition Paint and since Sophia wanted a neutral non-girlie room she had requested a white room. My architectural rep, Shane Jones, is awesome and sponsored the paint for our ORC room and it is beautiful paint! I’ve used Emerald before but I haven’t used it in my spray gun and I have to say I love the finish the SW Emerald Designer Edition Urethane provides. It’s beautiful!

In Week Two we changed wallpaper since Sophia wanted a more sophisticated and dramatic room. She selected Cole and Sons Nuvolette Wallpaper in Soot and Snow. Hanging wallpaper on a ceiling is an experience as I shared in Week Three! I think next time there is a ceiling involved, I’ll have my paper hanger do it!!

Teen Girl Room: Custom Built-Ins Complete with a Cozy Window Seat

The biggest impact in her room was the built-ins. They filled the awkward space that I had previously filled with a chair that never got used. She now has a ton of storage for all of her things and already loves her window seat! One of the master carpenters I work with spent half a day building them and I did the rest of the work to finish them with Sophia’s help. It was a lot of work, but very worth it since they had the biggest impact on the space!

I’m so pleased with how her bed turned out and really glad we decided to keep it and refinish it. Refinishing the night stand completely transformed that as well and the two work really nicely together and I did replace the knobs on the nightstand to something a little more modern than what was originally on it. We bought new white sheets for her bed from Target and ordered shams from one of my trade vendors to balance the black bed and carry that darker charcoal color through, balance the space and help ground the bed. She wanted a blanket since she won’t sleep under a flat sheet, so the minute the photoshoot was over, the flat sheet came off the bed!! We found a really soft blanket at Target from their new Casaluna line. Since Sophia insisted she did not want to look in a mirror everyday, I hung it over her nightstand to bounce a little light around that corner of the room. She’s just happy she won’t stare at herself when she’s sleeping or drawing.

Can we talk about that neon sign !! I walk in sometimes just to turn it on and see the pretty glow down the hallway. We are both really happy added it, Sophia loves it and it is such a great feature and mood light at night as well. If you are in the market for one, reach out to Deju, he was great to work with. The Harry Potter Golden Snitch was a finishing touch; she says it helps her sleep at night! Haha

My original plan was using a different area rug, but I ended up landing on this rug from Jaipur, one of my trade resources. It’s their Valen rug and it’s so soft. It also made a huge difference in keeping her room light and bright! Sophia actually selected the duvet and it was an Overstock find, but Wayfair carries them as well. (link below)

Let’s look at her dresser and that art!!! Sophia needed storage for clothes but wanted a grown up dresser, so we found this modern dresser from West Elm. I did look at some of my sources, but with Covid, no one was shipping quickly, so West Elm it was. We love the combination of the lacquered top and waterfall sides and the white washed wood drawers. The art is by Theresa Bear from Minted. She has some really amazing pieces. We loved the colors in this piece and it worked with a lot of Sophia’s other art and books. The tray was also a West Elm find and the turquoise blue worked perfectly to hold Sophia’s jewelry containers. Sophia still loves Lego’s and made these Gorses with a younger friend. She was really embarrassed that we added them to the photoshoot, but they were so creative and fun we had to! The Minecraft creation below is one of her prized possessions so we had to capture it! We shot that in her room at her desk, such a great photo of it!!

One of the things Sophia had been asking me for was a desk in her room so she could draw or do homework in a quiet space. I pulled the desk from the guest room to use in here and it was a perfect fit. The chair I ordered isn’t arriving due to Covid until September, so I pulled one of my breakfast nook chairs up to her room for her to use in the meantime. I think it looks pretty good actually!

Her collection of Pokeman posters didn’t all make it, but one did and I primarily chose it for color. I layered a dry erase calendar and letter board on her desk and she’ll love being able to change both of those. You might notice her collection of sharks teeth on her desk!

It’s important to know that the letterboard says Free-sha-va-ca-dooo. I’ve been corrected a million times because I keep saying it wrong. Get with it mama!!!

These pillows are favorites!! The rear pillow is from a trade source and the front pillow was a surprise find from Cushy Home. They were both great and shipped in quickly for me just for the ORC!! Thanks guys!

The Delightful End Result

Sophia is really enjoying her room and she’s had a few friends over who love being in the space as well! Well this may have been my first ORC, but I don’t think it will be my last! I have figured out it will force me to finish rooms in my own house instead of just working on client projects! Maybe I’ll get a couple of my other projects done before the fall and I can save a few things to consider for the fall ORC?!
