Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Week 1: Teen Girl’s Room Transformation
Well, I’ve done it now! I am participating in my first ever One Room Challenge which is sponsored by Better Homes and Gardens! I’m super excited and just a little nervous to get it finished in time. The One Room Challenge is a bi-annual event, which features 20 interior designers and bloggers who transform a room in their own homes in six weeks, along with other bloggers and designers as guest participants. Everyone has six weeks (eight this year) to finish their space. I’m also excited to follow along with the other participants and I hope you find a lot of inspiration from following along with us.
The Challenge: Fresh and Personalized Bedroom for a Teen Girl
This is good motivation for me to finish my daughter, Sophia’s bedroom. We started transforming her room about 2 years ago (maybe not quite two years ago) and I never got around to finishing it. You know the plumber with the leaky pipes who can’t ever get to his own house?? That’s me!! I never have time to work on my own projects and I suffer with a little bit (or a lot) of analysis paralysis when it comes to putting a plan together and sticking to it. I can close my eyes and put together a home from the ground up for a client, but when it comes to my own space I just can’t seem to do it and finish it before I change my mind. My kids just roll their eyes at me!!!! So the ORC will be a great motivation to pull Sophia’s room together and transform it into a space that can transition with her through the rest of middle school and hopefully high school.
I had taken down all of her artwork and purchased a new comforter she had fallen in love with along with watermelon pillows. I don’t usually do theme design, but two years ago I was just happy she picked something out. This is where we are today.

I took all of her fairy artwork off the walls and they have been bare since. I also replaced her ceiling fan about a year ago so that may be staying…..or maybe not.
We are getting rid of things slowly, so the shelves are going to go.
I bought this side chair at a flea market had it reupholstered for her room seven years ago. I’m not sure it’s going to stay.
Current Mood Boards and Inspiration: Sophisticated Teen Girl’s Bedroom
This is what we have planned for her room now. Sophia had very specific requests, so I’m excited to help bring her vision to life. We are starting with the bed, which we are keeping and some original Alice in Wonderland artwork she bought at a street market last year. The colors in the artwork are the jumping off point for some pops of color since she wanted a room that was “Nothing girlie mom!!!”. Hahaha, my little tomboy! Here is our plan….it is Sophia approved!!!

As much as I would love to replace the carpet, I cant’ do that since it is in every space upstairs. I’ll have to live with it for now. I haven’t received any samples yet, but will be using Sherwin Williams new Emerald Designer Edition paint on both the walls and Sophia’s bed, so I’m excited to see how the finish turns out. I bought wallpaper for Sophia’s head wall, but of course never got it up on the wall, so we are going to hope there is enough to put on the ceiling. Stay tuned, I still have to find an area rug and lamps….and maybe a new ceiling fan.
